The Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) has announced the launch of a Leadership Institute to support college presidents and their teams of senior administrators in improving free expression, inclusion, and belonging on their campuses. The Institute is now taking registrations for its inaugural cohort of participants.
With Americans' trust in higher education at an all-time low and a divisive presidential election on the horizon, the need to improve discourse on campuses is more critical than ever.
“As ideological divisions deepen, colleges find themselves needing to navigate an increasingly fraught political landscape,” says Caroline Mehl, co-founder and executive director of CDI. “College presidents have to redefine their role and the role of higher education to stay above the fray and maintain–or even rebuild–a campus characterized by healthy discourse.”
The Leadership Institute represents a new partnership between CDI and Credo, a higher education consulting firm with decades of experience in higher education leadership, strategy, and culture. The Institute is designed to support campus leaders in improving discourse while balancing free expression and inclusion. The institute begins with a three-day, in-person summit from October 28 to 31, 2024 in Washington, D.C.
Participants from colleges nationwide will broaden their understanding of how political polarization has impacted higher education, expand their repertoire of tools to manage conflicting pressures from stakeholders, and begin the work of fostering a campus culture that promotes engagement across lines of difference. Through interactive workshops, case studies, and peer-to-peer learning, campus leaders will gain the insights and skills needed to drive meaningful change within their institutions. Following the in-person gathering, participants will have the opportunity to share learnings and best practices with a network of peers through a professional learning community.
“We at Credo are thrilled to partner with CDI for the Leadership Institute. Our longstanding focus on strategy, leadership, and culture in higher education complements CDI’s exceptional research and resources for colleges and universities to foster engagement across lines of difference,” said Emma Jones, Executive Vice President and Owner at Credo. “Together, we have the opportunity to support leaders in unique ways as they step into the challenges ahead.”
